How Do You Define Alternative Music?

I think there are two problems in defining contemporary alternative music. 1) Every time there's a band with a unique sound publicists, reviewers, and producers attempt to buy credibility by creating a new sub-genre. Thus we're stuck with a tons of subgenres when what we need is, as you pointed out, a new umbrella! 2) The other issue is that not enough time has passed to separate the wheat from the chaff. Those oldies stations you referred to, you like those songs because those are very literally the best songs form that era. Nowadays there's such a huge volume of diverse music coming out that we're not exactly sure how to go about culling the fat, or who should go and who should stay. In another 20 years it might get better, but who knows?

Great post, thanks!

Very nice answer to my question! We have so many new musicians coming out every day it's pretty hard to keep track of them. It would be nice to have a new umbrella, as you said, or even several, to just differentiate them all.
