It’s a sham, but not the worst. Death, a Detroit band comprising some black dudes, arrived during what amounts to a cultural vacuum. By the early seventies, Iggy and company had fallen apart, only sporadically reconvening for performances in odd line-ups. And that was in either LA or NYC. The Ramones had started messing around, but wouldn’t issue a record for a few years. And while there were a few Cleveland bands at the time, none would record or play outside of Ohio. All that means, though, is that punk hadn’t become a commodity, which is why it’s funny that Death’s demos are being hocked as a consumable product. Some of the tracks are alright – “Can You Give Me A Thrill???” specifically. But for the most part, Spiritual Mental Physical seems like a way to make a few extra bucks on the tail of 2009’s ...For The Whole World To See, which really wasn’t much better.
